The effects of family violence on children are never far from the front pages of Australian newspapers. Children who are living in an environment where Family Violence is occurring are also at a high risk to experience violence and/or abuse either directly or indirectly. Witnessing or experiencing Family Violence has an extreme negative impact on children that can have significant detriment to their emotional, psychological, social and educational wellbeing.

Whether they are aware of it or not, professionals working with children will be in contact with young people who have been exposed to Family Violence at some level. As professionals we may be the only people outside of the family to see the warning signs and have the opportunity to intervene. This workshop will provide a solid grounding for understanding the nature of Family Violence and the effects of exposure to it on children and young people.

Some of the key components that Greg will discuss include:

  • The latest definitions and conceptualisations of family violence
  • Challenging and clarifying common misconceptions.
  • Recognising the coping behaviours utilised by children and young people in violent environments
  • The long term impacts of living with violence on children’s development
  • Effective ways to engage children who are exposed to family violence
  • Keeping the focus on safety. How professionals can deal with and work constructively with children and families where violence is present
  • Pulling the pieces together to create an integrated practice model upon which successful interventions can be based.

Greg Yee is a Sydney based trainer, counsellor and supervisor who specialises in the field of domestic and family violence. He has worked for the last 23 years in a range of agency settings, and currently runs a successful private practice, splitting his time between delivering training for professional audiences and family violence counselling.

Greg delivers this workshop in an engaging and down to earth style. Combine this with his in depth knowledge and experience in the area of family violence and you have a workshop that is a must for every professional who works with children, young people and families.
