Why do some children’s problem behaviour continue and/or escalate no matter how adults respond?  Individuals with pervasive and persistent challenging behaviour are often reinforced by the very things that are commonly used as consequences for misbehaviour.  In order to break the cycle of problem-punish-problem-punish, adults need a different approach.

In this practical workshop, a collaborative systematic approach based on prevention and early intervention will be presented.  The ideas and strategies are applicable across all age ranges and professional settings offering anyone who interacts with young people with challenging behaviour (teachers, social workers, psychologists, parents, etc.) evidence based interventions to support and promote healthy behavioural, social and emotional development.  Main topics that will be addressed will include:

  • A template for a strength based, collaborative, individualized support plan
  • Direct instruction of behaviour, social, and emotional regulation skills needed to be successful in the 21st century such as effective problem solving, conflict resolution, self-management and coping skills
  • Prevention techniques based on the function of behaviour and factors that contribute to its occurrence and maintenance
  • Motivating children to partner with you by using naturally occurring reinforces to your advantage
  • Avoiding common pitfall such as power struggles and providing undesirable consequences that are not reasonable or enforceable
  • De-escalation strategies that reduce aggression and therefore the use of controversial interventions such as restraint and seclusion
  • Guidelines for working productively with families and professionals from other disciplines

Kaye Otten holds a Doctorate in Special Education with a specialization in emotional, behavioural and autism spectrum disorders, a M.Ed. in Special Education with an endorsement in Behaviour Disorders, and a B.A. in elementary education and child development.  She has extensive experience in a variety of settings working with children and youth with challenging behaviour at the preschool to high school level.
