Commonly Asked Questions

Theraplay® is a dyadic child and family therapy that has been recognised by the Association for Play Therapy as one of seven seminal psychotherapies for children. Developed over 50 years ago and practiced around the world, Theraplay was developed for any professional working to support healthy child and caregiver attachment. Strong attachment between the child and the important adults in their life has long been believed to be the basis of lifelong good mental health, as well as the mainstay of resilience in the face of adversity. Modern brain research and the field of neuroscience have shown that attachment is the way in which children come to understand, trust and thrive in their world.

Group Theraplay® training is for professionals who want to use Theraplay in classrooms, day care, residential settings or with family groups. There is a one-day option for those who have taken Level One Theraplay and MIM, and a two-day option for those who have not.

A Theraplay® group is an adult-directed, structured play group that incorporates playful, cooperative and nurturing activities that enhance the emotional wellbeing of children. Unlike other play group approaches, Theraplay learning takes place on a non-verbal level. Instead of talking about positive social behaviour, the group leaders and children do positive social interaction. Positive messages from the group interaction gradually become part of the child's internal sense of self.

The training is suitable for professionals who have experience working with children and families, or parents or caregivers whose children have experienced developmental trauma and show attachment and relationship difficulties with their primary caregivers.

Mental Health Professionals: All mental health professionals including, but not limited to, clinical counsellors, psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists, mental health workers, family therapists, child protection and disability workers, guidance officers, speech and language therapists, residential care workers and foster support workers, and all other mental health professionals looking to support young people and their parents or carers.

Education Professionals: Professionals who work with children or youth including, but not limited to, K-12 school counsellors, school paraprofessionals and all other professionals who support behavioural challenges and complex learning needs.
