Working with people who are experiencing or have previously experienced mental illness, abuse and trauma means that practitioners and helping professionals often respond to complex and challenging situations.
Taking a trauma-informed approach means we must also recognise the impacts on ourselves as practitioners (and co-workers) of continuously responding to stressful events and behaviours.
This may result in experiences of burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, distress, dissatisfaction, hopelessness, ethical dilemmas and mental or physical health problems.
This is an important occupational health and safety issue for organisations and professionals, and should be addressed through a range of strategies and policies to achieve a mentally healthy workplace.
