Tools for resilience and wellbeing in School Settings

This one-day workshop is tailored for school staff, school counsellors, and educators to equip them with essential tools for fostering safety, reducing stress, and preventing burnout in their educational roles. Designed with the unique needs of school settings in mind, the workshop emphasises practical strategies that can be implemented during school hours, with colleagues, and beyond the classroom. These techniques are grounded in therapeutic principles and are especially effective when supporting students facing stress, trauma, or challenging behaviours.

Creating a sense of safety is a core requirement for any educator or school team aiming to support students dealing with a wide range of needs and vulnerabilities. This workshop introduces an integrative approach to help school staff incorporate sustainable self-care practices that align with the school environment, their professional role, and individual needs. Participants will explore how mentally healthy schools promote resilience and sustainable effectiveness, even when faced with the demands of supporting students in emotionally challenging situations. This workshop provides school staff with strategies to minimise burnout and other hazards associated with high-stress work.

The workshop combines insights and techniques from Interpersonal Neurobiology, Systems Theory, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Trauma-Informed Practice to offer diverse strategies that can be adapted to each school’s unique context.

Topics include:

  • Understanding Dysregulation: Explore brain and nervous system mechanisms that impact behaviour and regulation, with insights into how these relate to classroom interactions.
  • Stress Contagion in School Settings: Recognise how stress and emotional reactivity can spread within classrooms and teams, affecting school climate and team dynamics.
  • Identifying Stress, Burnout, and Secondary Trauma: Learn definitions and symptoms of burnout and vicarious trauma, with tools to help recognise signs in yourself and colleagues.
  • Building a Personal Toolkit: Engage in hands-on exercises to build a toolkit that can be used immediately for stress management and self-regulation in the school environment.
  • Participants will leave with a personalised toolkit of strategies to enhance their resilience, support their colleagues, and sustain their well-being in school.
